Facebook and Google have been competing with each other since a long time. While earlier the competition was for social media presence, now it is related to the latest trends in technology. Augmented reality and virtual reality are the two technologies which are now extremely popular. Facebook has already entered the virtual reality market by acquiring Oculus VR. Now Google has invested in Magic Leap, a company which is working on high quality augmented reality.
What does this imply? Is Google competing with Facebook, with this investment in Magic Leap?
Oculus Rift and Facebook
Oculus Rift, as we all know by now, provides an immersive virtual reality experience for the users by placing them in a 3D environment. The sensors in the device track users’ head movement, which means you can crouch, lean or take any position you like to look around the digital world.
In the beginning, the device was funded through a Kickstarter campaign and was developed for gaming. But now, with the acquisition of Facebook, it might be used in other areas like travel, medical consultations and virtual schooling.

Google and Magic Leap
Right now, it is not yet known what Magic Leap is developing. The only thing we know is that it is developing a “lightweight wearable”, like glasses or contacts which can apparently overlay virtual images onto the users’ vision of real world. This is done probably by mapping images directly on the retina of the users. The process works in a similar way as the eye works, which reduces nausea.
This might seem to be an impossible feat for many but Google seems to have faith in the vision of the company. The search giant has not only invested a huge amount but also led the funding by gathering more investors.
Magic Leap’s technology could provide a huge possibility of integrating it with Google Glass. This might give a boost to the number of Google Glass consumers for the company.
Facebook Vs Google: Virtual Reality War
With Oculus Rift, you will be taken out of your normal world to an immersive virtual world. However, with Magic Leap, your normal world will be made extraordinary by enhancing your real life. While Magic Leap takes the technology to the user, Oculus Rift takes the user into its technology. So, the competition can be said to be between augmented and virtual reality.
Even though the visions are different, Oculus Rift and Magic Leap will be competing with each other, once the devices hit the commercial market. Both of them aim to provide a unique educational, social and gaming experience to the users.
While Facebook has completely made Oculus a part of the company, Google has complete trust on Magic Leap and has invested more than $500 million.
Once both the devices are available in the market, only then will it be possible to find out who has the last laugh- Google or Facebook.
