Film festivals are getting a new twist now. As virtual reality has entered the film making industry, many directors are busy creating VR films to attract the movie buffs. With increase in the number of VR films, now an entire film festival will be held which will focus only on these films. The film festival has been named the Kaleidoscope VR Film Festival and it highlights the work of independent filmmakers of VR. The festival is presented by VR agency Kaleidoscope which is located in San Francisco.
Virtual Reality-Focused Film Festival
The VR film festival will travel to different parts of the country and will start on 22nd August. It will be a 10-city tour. The first stop will be Portland. Other stops where the festival will travel to, include Seattle, New York, Vancouver, Los Angeles, Denver, San Francisco, Montreal, Toronto and Austin.
According to Kaleidoscope release, the tour will “showcase the best in virtual reality filmmaking and the top artists working in this cutting edge field.”
Michael Breymann, co-founder of Kaleidoscope, said “The aim of the Kaleidoscope film festival is to create a space for independent artists and audiences alike to discuss, connect and experience virtual reality films and to keep the conversation going. The line-up we have selected showcases today’s best and brightest VR filmmakers, and we are thrilled to share these immersive and interactive stories with audiences as the festival tours around North America.”
The audience members will also get to use Samsung Gear VR headsets and the Oculus Rift at all the stops.
The List of Films
The number of VR films that will be displayed for each stop is not yet known. However at every location, there will be talks and demos from the filmmakers of VR films and also from others in the industry.
With these films, virtual reality does not find its use only for video games. It will take the possibilities of VR in interesting directions. Among the various films, Colosse is controlled by the things viewers look at. Another film, The Nepal Quake Project will give the viewers a tour of the wreckage the country had faced after the major earthquake. Another VR movie called Butts explores butts that shoot confetti and associated animated characters.
