Facebook founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg has discussed about the importance of virtual reality and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies that are being developed by the company and how they will change the world. He wrote in a question and answer section on Facebook, why his company is developing virtual reality and AI tools which are focused on areas like voice and facial recognition. He believes that we will be able to share our experiences and communicate with others using our thoughts.

Artificial Intelligence Projects under Development
Zuckerberg said “We’re working on AI because we think more intelligent services will be much more useful for you to use.” He said that with artificial intelligence, you could get notified if someone takes a photo with you in it or it would become easier to find posts and images related to your interests.
“Similarly, if we could build computers that could understand what’s in an image and could tell a blind person who otherwise couldn’t see that image that would be pretty amazing as well. This is all within our reach and I hope we can deliver it in the next 10 years.”
Many AI projects by this social media company are under development, which will improve the services offered by it. The company runs AI labs which looks at how everything can be done, right from image recognition to voice translation in Silicon Valley, New York and Paris. Earlier this year Facebook purchased Wit.ai, a voice-recognition startup.
Zuckerberg said “In order to do this really well, our goal is to build AI systems that are better than humans at our primary senses: vision, listening, etc. For vision, we’re building systems that can recognize everything that’s in an image or a video. This includes people, objects, scenes, etc. These systems need to understand the context of the images and videos as well as whatever is in them. For listening and language, we’re focusing on translating speech to text, text between any languages, and also being able to answer any natural language question you ask.”
Virtual Reality in Action
Another area which Facebook is working upon is virtual reality. Last year itself, Facebook started its journey on the path of this technology by acquiring Oculus VR, the developers of VR headset Oculus Rift, for $2bn.
Zuckerberg said “We’re working on VR because I think it’s the next major computing and communication platform after phones. In the future we’ll probably still carry phones in our pockets, but I think we’ll also have glasses on our faces that can help us out throughout the day and give us the ability to share our experiences with those we love in completely immersive and new ways that aren’t possible today.”
These new ways include developing unfeasible virtual structures, virtually meeting someone who is located far away and remaking real-world scenes as 3D spaces which can be explored virtually.
So, we can expect to see more AI tools and virtual reality developments coming from Facebook’s side.
