MTV has also chosen virtual reality technology to reach out to tech lovers. The channel will live stream 360 degree virtual reality video for the red carpet pre-show of the 2015 “MTV Video Music Awards,” which will be held on 30th August, Sunday. MTV teamed up with virtual reality studio, IM360 for this VR project. So, how will the viewers experience this red carpet VR video?
Experiencing MTV VMA Coverage
Desktop viewers will be able to use their mouse to move through the immersive scenes of the live VR experience. If you are a mobile user, you can download the IM360 app and watch the red-carpet coverage from different angles. You just have to move your device in any direction. Apart from the live VR experience, using MTV’s All Access Live platform, viewers will be able to stream the red carpet on Sunday.
Colin Helms, senior VP of MTV Connected Content, said “Virtual reality is changing the way people see the world and we’re excited to bring this innovative storytelling tool onto the VMA red carpet ahead of this year’s show.”
Jeff Jacobs, senior vice president, production, planning, strategies, and operations at MTV said that “The VMA 360 Virtual Reality experience is the result of months of R&D and experimentation combining creative desires and emerging technologies. The collaboration of VMA Producers, Scenic Designers, Art Directors and IM360 ensured the VMAs Red Carpet layout, which includes multiple curves and heights, is conducive to maximizing the production effectiveness for virtual reality. The application of this 360 degree virtual reality technology raises the bar for award show coverage and storytelling by bringing fans that much closer to the action.”
Other Digital Initiatives
The VR video footage is being produced using two extra virtual reality camera rigs on the red carpet and inside the VMAs. Miley Cyrus will be hosting this year’s VMAs. The red-carpet show will start at 6:30 PM ET on 30th August. The VR content will then be available on demand through mtv.com and its YouTube channel. The All Access Live feature video has been captured using 16 different cameras.
Other digital initiatives of MTV include VMA “Live Story” which will be delivered by Snapchat. Other VMA related content will also be promoted on different social media channels like Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Vine, Instagram and also on various other MTV digital platforms.
Those who are streaming the red carpet will also be able to access MTV News, which teamed up with Playbuzz, a gaming platform. They can swipe right to like and left to dislike MTV News updates and red carpet interviews. MTV Style will hand over its Twitter Periscope account to Shop Jeen, an online clothing and accessories store.
