Samsung has made a surprise announcement at its 2014 Developer Conference. It unveiled a 360-degree camera named ‘Project Beyond’, which will capture everything in its surrounding in 3D. A gigapixel of three dimensional recording is captured every second that can be streamed back to a Samsung Gear VR headset. The person wearing the headgear will be transported into a virtual world with the footage and the users will be able to feel this virtual 3D environment around them. Let us have a look at what this new device can offer to the users.
Project Beyond is billed as “the world’s first true 3D 360-degree camera”. It can be used to capture as well stream videos of high resolution. Users will be allowed to teleport to the locations and events they want to see.
The hardware of Project Beyond is a disc-shaped accessory that has an array of cameras on top as well around its edges. There are 16 full high-definition cameras in all. The Think Tank Team of Samsung developed the device.
Wherever the device is placed, it can continuously create a virtual 3D surrounding out of it. People will be able to record or tune in live footage which can be viewed at any time. Project Beyond looks similar to the Google Street View cameras, but it is more portable and smaller.
A Project in Development
According to the Think Tank Team, Project Beyond is not a product but it is a project under development. With each version, there will be improvements to the system. The device’s first operational version is planned to provide “just a taste” of what the users will get from the final version of the system.
The company plans to take the cameras of Project Beyond across different locations in the world, once the development is complete. The beautiful locations and the notable events can be experienced by the users of the Gear headset and they will feel as if they are really present in the locations.
The Project Beyond camera will not be available for sale yet. However, users who purchase the Gear VR headset for the Galaxy Note 4, will be able to experience the trial device.
