With IKEA’s augmented reality app there is no need to imagine; you can preview how the furniture will look in your home in real time!
Shopping for durable goods like furniture is best done in person; however, it is often confusing, especially when you are move throughout a store like IKEA. It is hardly possible to know if the couch or the table you liked would fit in your room. Here, you need to rely completely on your imagination and memory. To solve issues like this, the Swedish furniture maker offers augmented reality apps for their 2014 catalog that allows the shoppers to visualize how furniture would look in their room in real time. This augmented reality app is available for iOS and Android phones.
Leontyne Green Sykes, the chief marketing officer of IKEA North America said, “While the hard copy is still relevant, allowing readers to tear out pages to create collages of the things they like, it’s also exciting to interact, throughout the year wherever you are, with a catalog when it becomes a mobile piece with a digital component. The augmented reality app was desired by our users since we launched the app last year.”
In 2012, 8.5 million users downloaded this augmented reality app. This AR technology provides both 360- degree and 180-degree views of a room using the sensors of mobile devices. It layers the image with 3D furniture renderings in real time.
The marketers believe that this augmented reality app will help the company to increase user engagement as well as sales. However, the real concern of IKEA that motivated them to develop this AR technology is to bring convenience to consumers.
The furniture renderings of IKEA are available only for a selected number of items at present and not their entire catalog.
