Return of the Straight Six Engine
Mercedes will start using brand-new modular in-line six cylinder motors which are cheaper to build instead of the V6 engines. The motors will be in diesel and petrol form and are closely related to the matching fours.
According to Car Magazine, a 2.9 liter diesel variant will be released first in the global market, which develops 313 horsepower when twin-turbocharged and more than 400 horsepower when four chargers are used, two of them being battery-powered turbos.
At the last end of the E-class range, there is a 122 horsepower 1.6 liter four-pot. This is believed to average 99g of CO2 for each kilometer.
By 2017, more hybrid E-classes are expected. Ten new plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) will be launched by the auto manufacturer. There are three e-class derivatives among them- a Europe-only PHEV diesel to be added later in the lifecycle, a US-only mix of 3.0 liter V6 and 109 horsepower e-machine and a blend of 2.0 liter four and 82 horsepower e-motor.
