Motion capture technology is not a new technology but it hasn’t yet become popular as it is cost-prohibitive and burdensome for the general mass market. However, now with Project PERCEPTION NEURON, a cost effective and adaptive motion capture system will be available to the people. One of the world’s smallest IMU has been used to create this system. It is a full-body motion capture system and its wireless. The system has been designed to let the wearers have an unbelievable experience in the virtual world. Currently the project is running a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds.
With this wireless system wearers can easily move around. You just need to link it with your Wi-Fi router and you are ready to go. A 9 axis IMU has been used which is the size of a finger nail and does all the on-board calculation. There are different applications of this system in the field of game interaction, sport analysis, virtual reality, VFX, real-time stage performance, medical analysis and more.
Here is a brief overview of the applications of PERCEPTION NEURON:
- Virtual Reality/ Game Interaction
There is smooth incorporation with HMD and with open source game engine demonstrations. A gesture control library is included in the system. Wearers will feel that they are present in the virtual world.
The system supports motion recording and replaying. It supports BVH and FBX format output which is supported for MotionBuilder, Maya, Blender, etc.
- Stage Performance
Wireless data transmission is carried out and the data stream output is done in real-time.
- Sport /Medical Analysis
With this system, position, orientation, gyro data flow and other related information can be obtained in real-time. If the wearers want to go for data plotting and recording or comparison, they can use the free data visualizer.
Right now Project PERCEPTION NEURON is running a crowdsourcing campaign on Kickstarter. The campaign had started from 9th August, 2014 and will continue till 13th September, 2014, for a period of 35 days.
